Why Are There So Many
Denominations?
God warned man not to follow the crowd to do evil. Jesus also said to beware of the “wide gate”, for many will go in there. Yet, even knowing this, why do so many denominations exist? Have we not considered the example of Noah? Out of all the world, only eight were considered righteous. What should we learn from this? Therefore, seriously consider Jesus’ admonition, when He said, “…narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” But you cannot find what you are not truly looking for!
Lesson 1:
The Heart of Denominationalism
The Scripture teaches that there is only one Spirit, one Lord, and one faith; yet denominations are what the world sees. Is Christ divided? Certainly not! God is not the author of confusion, and therefore, not the author of denominationalism. What then is the source of denominationalism?
Lesson 2:
Denominationalism: A Misplaced Focus and Mission
What are some things many denominations have in common? Though teachings vary either great or small from one another, they have a similar focus, which defines a denominational mission. Let us look at what we generally see denominations have in common, and compare that to what the scripture teaches.
Lesson 3:
Denominationalism: Called to a Different 'Gospel'
There would be no point in denominationalism if all these groups taught the same thing! After all, they would then cease to differ and would likewise cease to denominationalize. Therefore, it is obvious that there are many varying forms of “gospels” among them. Yet, there is only one gospel, because there is only one Christ. Denominationalism by its very nature is a variation from the original.
